Oasis Africa - School for Orphans in Kibera Slum Project

Oasis Africa Australia  www.oasisafrica.net is a not for profit humanitarian organisation founded July 2005 by Australian professionals. After seeing the need first hand they initiated a school community in Kibera slum Nairobi, Kenya.

This slum is the largest in the world. It started with 100 orphans needing basic school facilities (at the time their classroom was a sewage ridden mud hut they had to cram into with their headmaster).

Oasis Africa Australia has been providing funding support for the project from Australia since June 2005 to address this.

Catalyst Connection

In May 2006, Oasis Afica Australia partnered with Cataylst to help expand the funding support for this important project.  With the help and expertise of Catalyst and large base of committed volunteers, we launched a high profile corporate event in October 2006 which featured an international Afro Australian fashion show,  African song / dance groups, International Government and UN humanitarian representatives.

Three hundred corporate and celebrity attended the event, giving generously.  We raised a record $170,000 at this event.

What are we doing now?

With the funds raised we were able to kick start a 3 year plan and initiate projects such as toilet blocks, a fence around the school, text books, desks/chairs and medical camp etc.

The school now proudly provides holistic care for over 650 children. They have a safe school environment, receive state level education from the seven employed teachers, receive two meals a day, counselling on 'Living with AIDS,' and basic medical care.

Karen and Ross Howe, founding members of Catalyst, have just spent 4 weeks working with at the school and connecting with the kids. They are training the project co-ordinator on the ground regarding the new online child sponsorship website we are about to launch. After seeing the difference we are making in this slum, they have pledged their commitment to this project for many many years to come. We are all looking forward to seeing even the first child leave the school and attend university, so we can help them find jobs. Bring it on! Get involved any way you can!
