The Hunger Projectwww.thp.org.au

The Hunger Project is a global organisation using leadership, training and education to end hunger in the developing world, empowering local people to take effective, sustainable and strategic action.   It does this by taking large scale action where hunger persists – in India, Bangladesh, Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Malawi, Mozambique, Senegal, Uganda, Ethiopia, Bolivia, Mexico and Peru.   The Hunger Project works to awaken the human spirit within hungry people, to educate leaders at grassroots level, to empower those most affected by hunger and to transform the conditions that cause hunger. At the heart of this approach is the empowerment of women. www.thp.org.au

WorkVentures

The WorkVentures Group (www.workventures.com.au) is a Sydney-based non-profit enterprise, which, among other things, is helping address the “digital divide” with an innovative solution to the growing problem of the disposal of used computers in Australia.  Their Connect IT program, run by Steve McCready, is in the business of turning ex corporate and government PCs and peripheral equipment into affordable systems for disadvantaged families, schools and not for profit organisations around Australia. Over the last 3 years WorkVentures have provided over 10 000 individuals on Centrelink benefits and registered not-for-profit organisations with quality PC packages which are now only $250. The self-funded program works by refurbishing and selling (at a much reduced cost of $250) superceded computers that would otherwise be dumped in landfill at great cost to the environment and transforming them into a useful resource for disadvantaged people. Westpac has been involved with WorkVentures Connect IT since its inception, and has given the program several thousand computers to be refurbished and resold.  Other organisations supporting the program include Microsoft, which donates software for the refurbished computers, Boston Consulting Group who devised the business plan for Connect IT, as well as Fujitsu, Minter Ellison Lawyers, NSW Government, Social Ventures Australia, Australian Teleservices Association and The Smith Family.  As well as ensuring financially disadvantaged people have access to computer technology at low cost, the program plays an important role in developing new skills among the long-term unemployed.

If you think your company might want to donate your IT equipment to WorkVentures Connect IT, you can find more information by calling 1800 112 205, or visiting www.workventures.com.au/connectit for further information.
